Clean Up Australia Day

6 Mar 2011 - 8:30am - 12:15pm

Register on the day at the hall between 8.30am and 10.30am or online at If you register online, please advise the section you want to clean up so we don't send others there.

When the Carwoola community first took part in Clean Up Australia Day in 1991, 94 people collected over 17 tonnes of garbage from the 15 km of roadside in Carwoola. That included seven 44-gallon drums of glass bottles. And weren’t we proud about how clean and tidy the Captains Flat Road looked!

It didn’t take long to lose its shine. So the Carwoola community has held a Clean Up Day event every year since. Each year the amount collected got less and the Captains Flat Road shone for a little while longer. For a while, the Community Association even paid an industrious member of the community to collect rubbish each month from the roadside in the areas most prevalent to littering.

On Clean Up Australia Day last year, just 16 people collected more than 45 bags of rubbish. Queanbeyan City Council assisted with road signage, hi-vis vests and the garbage truck to collect the rubbish at the end of the day, and Palerang Council for the greatly appreciated cold drinks and more hi-vis vests for the volunteers.
